Many companies used to think of remote work similar to the bogeyman - workers would get lost in the remote work abyss and never seen or heard from again. Well, it turns out that it’s not as scary as some organizations make it out to be - 16% of companies globally are fully remote with 63% offering a hybrid or remote-first option. The majority of them utilize a global remote workforce. Read on to find out who some of them are.

So it turns out a remote workforce isn’t as scary as it turns out for a lot of global companies. According to the recent Owl Lab State of Remote Work report1, 16% of companies globally are fully remote with 63% offering a hybrid or remote-first option. That’s a lot of businesses around the world without corporate office space. In this article we will explore a number of these companies who have remote employees living all across the world while still delivering quality results.

Companies Using a Global Remote Workforce

Shopify

Canada-based Shopify offers a cloud-based, multichannel commerce platform for small and medium-sized businesses. The platform is used to set up, design, and manage stores across multiple sales channels such as web, mobile, social media, brick-and-mortar spots, and pop-up shops. 

After the COVID pandemic started in 2020, Shopify moved to offering a remote-first working environment for its more than 7,000 employees which it calls ‘Digital By Design’. Employees are also able to work in the company’s offices in Canada and Ireland if they are in a position to.  Remote roles on offer include software engineer, customer service, account management / sales and marketing.

Zapier

Zapier helps people across the world automate the boring and tedious parts of their job. They  do that by helping everyone connect web applications they already use to automate tasks. Zapier’s 100% distributed team of 300 remote employees works in 28 countries and across 17 time zones.

Zapier has always been a fully remote company, and is constantly recruiting for a range of full-time roles including engineering, marketing, customer service and sales.

Trilogy

Trilogy was founded in 1989 as a startup in Silicon Valley. These days, it’s known as the comprehensive business platform that hundreds of leading software companies run on. 

The American company has a 100% fully-remote workforce that lives in every corner of the world. Software engineers, innovators, cloud operations engineers, and QA testers are just some of the roles they offer on a full-time, remote basis.

GitLab

GitLab is a web-based Git repository that provides free open and private repositories, issue-following capabilities, and wikis. It is a complete DevOps platform that enables professionals to perform all the tasks in a project—from project planning and source code management to monitoring and security.

Working with a 100% remote team since it started in 2011, Gitlab is considered a leader in a global fully-remote workforce. It also engaged a Head of Remote before the pandemic started.

Aurea Software

Bloom Institute of Technology, or BloomTech for short, offers a new model of accessible higher education with no upfront costs. The San Francisco based company provides an intensive program and online curriculum that teaches students the hard and soft skills they need to launch a new tech career. BloomTech regularly advertises for full-time remote employees, particularly in roles such as Salesforce developers and administrators, as well as other software engineering or architecture positions.
