Do you have your eye on a job at Crossover but are worried about the language barrier? Many of our top Brazilian remote workers found themselves with similar concerns.

So, I gathered them together so that they could tell you about the experience themselves. We met in sunny São Paulo, and shared personal Crossover stories. Each of these remote workers has been with their company now for over 2 years. They were excited to dispel some commonly held misconceptions.

Why is English Important at Crossover?

  • It’s important to have a common language, which in our case is English because we have teams from all over the world.
  • The company is multicultural. The company is global. And if we have English as our shared language, we can all understand each other, and we can align our goals, follow the same processes, and reach our objectives together.

Do You Have to Be Fluent in English?

  • In the day to day work we don’t need to speak fluent English. We just need to know how to communicate and write well. In order to send the message that we want to our clients and to the people in our team.
  • No. Our biggest fear is that we’d have to speak perfect English and never make mistakes. You have to be perfect. You have to be a native speaker. We couldn’t be more wrong.

Is it Easy to Communicate with Your Team?

  • The person you’re talking to wants to understand you and you want to share information with them and at the end of the day, its very objective and easy to understand and we actually enjoy the talks.
  • I see that as something that happens a lot in Brazil that you have to speak without an accent, forget about it. Relax. Because we also have people there to help us, that will teach us a lot of new things, a lot of new words vocabulary.

Should Brazilians with Conversational English Do the Test?

  • Yes! Seriously if there’s an opportunity, I’m going to go after it, I’m going to make it work.

Don't speak Portuguese? Here's an English version.

Ready to Apply for a Role with Crossover?

Don’t hesitate to apply for a job with Crossover, even if you think your English isn’t good enough. See how far you get, work on it, and try again if you fail.

Not all job roles require a high level of English. Many don't need you to be a fluent speaker. You only have to prove that you have enough English to do the job.

If you don't pass the test right away, spend time brushing up on your language skills and take it again in six months. The only true path to failure is giving up altogether.

If you pass, there's no telling how many doors it will open for you.
